Salkantay Trek is considered by National Geographic one of the most popular and famous hikes of the 25 best hikes in the world. It connects you with the Magic City of Machu Picchu It allows you to see Apu Salkantay (6,271 m) from really close by, impressing views of Andean nature and an exuberant tropical jungle surrounded by several fruits like passion fruit, avocados, custard apple, jungle tomatoes and infallable organic coffee to enjoy.
We leave Cusco very early at 3 o’clock at night (3 a.m.), by private transport destination Mollepata and Soraypampa, where we will have breakfast and at the same time, meet with our team of porters. Then, we will start our hike on a path leading uphill, accompanied by our experienced guide and a porter with an emergency horse that can be helpful, should there occur any mishaps during the trajectory. We continue until we arrive at the highest point (the Salkantay pass, 4,629 m) from where you will be able to observe the enigmatic Salkantay mountain and a panoramic view of the chain of mountains that are surrouding it. Next, we will descend to Huayraqmachay where our Chef awaits us with a picknick lunch. After lunch, we will continue our hike descending to the Challhuay camp, where we will take a local bus to the Town of Sahuayaco, where we will spend the night with a Homestay family. Everyone may bring 5-6 kg of personal luggage (sleeping bag is not needed).
After breakfast, we say goodbye to our Homestay family and start our hike very early today, so we can enjoy dawn in the tropical jungle until after a climb, we reach the archeological site of Llaqtapata. After our visit, we continue with a descent to Hydroelektrica and we will have lunch there, prepared by our Chef. As it is the last time we see him during this hike, we will say goodbye to our Chef and take the train to Aguas Calientes, where we will spend the night in a hotel.
We have to leave the hotel very early in the morning to take the bus to the Magical City of the Incas, which is considered a jewel of Inca architecture with agricultural terraces, neighbourhoods, squares, streets, an astronomic observatory etc. Constructed upon the slopes of the mountain, in the middle of nature, it is considered one of the miracles of today’s world. UNESCO has also recognized it as a part of our common Natural and Cultural Heritage, as it was an important religious, political and administrative center in the epoch of the Inca. The altitude is about 2,450 m. After exploring this Magical City, you may like to explore the mountain of Huayna Picchu. From the top of this mountain you can enjoy an impressing overview of the entire City of Machupicchu. It is advised to make reservations months in advance, so please do not hesitate to contact us, if you like to include Huaynapicchu. We will return to Aguas Calientes to take the train back to Ollantaytambo or Poroy, where our driver is waiting to take us back to the hotel in Cusco.
